The sample lessons will be held at the Reading Rooms. More information on the subjects and timings can be found below.

Economics

Time: 12:15pm - 1:00pm

Title of Lesson: Learning Economics from your own behaviour

Summary of Lesson:

Economics is basically the study of human behaviour using mathematical models and scientific thinking. As such one approach to learning economics is to examine how we ourselves behave and apply the appropriate math/scientific thinking to our behaviour. In this lesson we'll use some tech tools to capture data on how you think or behave according to certain scenarios. After which we'll attempt to link this data to the relevant economic concepts.

General Paper

Time: 12:00pm - 12:50pm

Title of Lesson: A Glimpse into GP

Summary of Lesson:

Students will be introduced to a typical GP topic, followed by group work to generate some understanding of a multi-faceted issue within the 45 minutes. There will be required independent reading and they will be guided to develop a visual presentation of their viewpoints to showcase their understanding of the issue.

Biology

Time: 2:00pm - 2:45pm

Title of Lesson: Life, the Final Frontier

Summary of Lesson:

This 45-minute long sample Biology lesson showcases Team-Based Learning and Inquiry-Based Learning via a series of warm up questions, a short consolidation and a case study. In the case study, students take on the persona of NASA scientists in the search of life on Mars, to define what is considered a living organism. Students who attend would experience the learning of H2 Biology, including the topics of Cell Theory, Viruses and Practices of Science.

Chemistry

Time: 2:00pm - 2:45pm

Title of Lesson: Guided Inquiry in Chemistry

Summary of Lesson:

The guided inquiry approach used in JC Chemistry lectures at HCI focuses on students’ thinking and application of concepts on-the-spot via specially-crafted worksheets. It differs from traditional teacher-talk lectures and requires students’ active engagement. In this sample lesson, students will experience a guided inquiry lesson on one of the first topics in A Level Chemistry. Prior knowledge of Sec 4 Chemistry will be helpful.
